Halton JAZZ Singers is a small jazz vocal group, with a goal of 2 members for each part (8 members total). We are a relatively new ensemble, founded in February, 2013. Musician singer candidates are recruited from Toronto, Mississauga and Hamilton, and, in particular, the Halton region.
Our repertoire is suggested by our members, and is comprised of songs written for four part harmony -soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. We sing various jazz styles, including swing, latin, ballad, and samba.
As in other community groups, there is a non-refundable membership fee.
If you decide that you might want to join Halton JAZZ Singers, you will be expected to adhere to a rehearsal schedule in preparation for educational and community outreach projects, gigs, and seasonal performances. Rehearsals are held Saturday mornings 10 a.m. -2:00 p.m. The schedule is posted on a group google calendar in advance. Rehearsals are used for rehearsing music! Google technology (g-mail, google docs, sheets, surveys, group email, shared docs, google group calendar) is used for all other communication; therefore, an ability to work within a computer/tablet/phone tech environment is expected!
You will also be expected to have sight reading/singing proficiency and an ability to sing and play your vocal part on a keyboard &/or tablet or phone keyboard app, during rehearsals and at home. Your vocal range should be a minimum of an octave and a half (12 notes) in your sectional range.
Once you complete the electronic application on the website “Membership Inquiry” the director will contact you by email &/or phone. A “Singer Candidate Survey” will be sent to you for completion. If the HJS panel agree that you are a suitable candidate, then the audition process begins – There is non-refundable audition fee which can be paid via paypal or email transfer. To ensure that your vocal technique and range are suited to HJC level of activities, you will be asked to demonstrate a range of music skills and knowledge. This is an integral part of the audition vocal requirements; While you may not initially have the knowledge of these technical skills, the various stages of the audition process are meant as a ‘learning’ phase as well as time for you and the director to determine if there is a ‘fit’ in all ways! It’s a process!
You are encouraged to prepare a VIDEO audition of yourself that demonstrates the required music skill sets. Upon receipt of the audition fee, you will receive the music skill set list to prepare. Once that stage has been completed and evaluated, you may be invited to come to meet with the section leader and music director for the next stage of the audition process. The music director [& section leader] will conduct a selection of further music interactions.
Upon successful completion of all of the stages of the AUDITION PROCESS, you will be invited to sing with us in a rehearsal setting. This is known as the “JAZZ-IN.” This will give you an opportunity to experience a HJC rehearsal! We get to ‘try each other on for a fit.’ A jazz-in date will be selected from rehearsal dates. You will receive rehearsal materials either via digital files or hard copies, with sufficient time for you to prepare and review HJC songs “in progress.”
Vocal Jazz is all about the ‘blending of voices like the jelling of jello. While you may have a voice that is a fabulous soloist style, HJC reserves the right to select singer candidates who truly meet all the criteria for a small vocal jazz adult community group – blend, musicianship, personality, commitment, flexibility and a team builder and player! Collaboration is the strength of Halton JAZZ Singers!
As space is limited, you have to register in advance for the Audition Process and JAZZ-IN.
We offer 3 hour rehearsals throughout a seasonal term, meaning Fall, Winter, and Spring. Each term is comprised of 7 or 8 weeks. Membership fee includes all rehearsal instruction. For professional development and growth as an emerging vocal group, you will be required to cover the additional costs of and participate in a vocal jazz workshop with the other singers; and to attend a concert to view & critique a well known professional vocal jazz group!
